Monkey Grip™
Monkey Grip might have to be considered the strangest start to a company ever. In 1916, an Oklahoma City man down on his luck with only $8 in his pocket came across an abused monkey in a pet shop window that was even more down on his luck than him. Tugging at his heart strings, he offered to buy the monkey hoping to give him a better life. The man even had to borrow $2 from a co-worker to afford the $10 asking price! One day while in a friend’s bicycle shop, being curious like monkeys are, “Doc” knocked over a can of rubber cement on top of an acid container and another solution. While the man cleaned the mess off of the floor, and from the monkey's hands, he noticed the rubber cement mixture vulcanizing much faster than usual. The man shared his discovery with the bicycle shop owner, who was waiting for rubber cement to dry in order to repair a puncture for a very impatient messenger boy. The shop owner insisted the man try repairing the messenger boy’s tire with his new found mixture. The repair worked! The man went on to create “The World’s Best Tire Patch.” Today, over 100 years later, still "Nothing Grips Like the Monkey"!
